If you're going to be running missions in low sec, there are a few things you can do to stay safer:
- WATCH LOCAL - show info on everyone you see, add notes to their info to remember, check out their corp, check their standings/bio/emploment history. You'll start to recognize the locals. When someone new pops up in local who you don't have a portrait for, check them out and be on your guard. It also helps to set some personal standing for local corps/players you trust, so they'll be highlighted blue, saving time on a quick look in local. High security status doesn't mean they aren't a pirate, and low sec status doesn't mean they are.
- SCAN!!!! - keep that scanner window open, with max range and 360 degrees. Make sure the 'use overview settings' button is unchecked, or the results won't show scan probes. Hit that scan button every 20 seconds and do a quick scroll down the list, checking for scan probes. If there are only people you trust in local, you can scan less often, but try to make it a habit without thinking.
- Remove wrecks from your overview until you've come back to loot and salvage. If you were lax in watching for probes and someone warps onto you, you don't want them to be at the bottom of an overview filled with wrecks and npc ships. Rememeber to bookmark each pocket, and come back after completing mission in a destroyer with tractors, salvagers, and an MWD.
- DON'T sit at the warp in point in the mission. Fly away from where you warp/jump gate in, so if someone enters your mission, you aren't immediately in range of their warp scramblers and damps. 50km away is great, since people love to do this in recon ships like an Arazu with a big bonus to warp scram range.
- ALIGN to a safe spot or station while killing stuff if you can. Stay at 75% or higher velocity and you can warp away very quickly if people enter your mission.
- Make an undocking bookmark. Undock in a frigate or interceptor with a MWD. Click to full speed and turn on the MWD, flying in the exact alignment you undocked with. Fly 1000km away from the station, and make a bookmark there. You always undock with the same alignment, so when in a big fat BS, you can warp to that bookmark MUCH more quickly and then warp to your mission from there, rather than aligning slowly outside the station.
- If you get a mission in a neighbouring system, and are worried about gate camps, have a noob alt in a shuttle in your mission system. Log to him and scout the few jumps first.
- If there are 8 low sec status dudes from the same corp in local, with 'yarrrrr' and hatemail quotes in their bios, jump clone somewhere else, or undock in a nice pvp ship and have some fun. Remember to save your nice mission-running implant-laden pod if you can! You could always go all out and organize some of the other mission runners that are holed up in the station waiting for the evil pirates to leave.
If you're cautious, you really won't get surprised missioning in low sec.
